What do Easter Eggs have to do with equalities?
This is not a post about chocolate.
Or Easter.
Not really.
I was making my Easter hunts for my niece and nephew and I realised it might be a good way to communicate a key equalities issue that causes confusion. Naturally.
If we treat everyone the same, we are not getting fairness.
As per Duplo characters in my expert photo, if we take time to find out their needs, we can adapt their treatment accordingly.
In this very crude example, it could be giving them a bigger egg, meeting their dietary requirements or recognising a different religious holiday.
For clarity, I am NOT saying don’t give Easter eggs. (I’m definitely not saying don’t give me Easter eggs!)
All of this comes down to proportionality, legality and the individual circumstances.
What I want you to take from this is the fact that we all are different.
Taking time to find out someone’s specific needs and responding to that individual is essential for true belonging.
